It is a historical delight to discover and explore some of France’s remaining walled cities. Amazingly, these relics have lasted through the centuries and take you back through history.
Le Chateau-d’Oleron has a fortress in surprisingly good condition and a triangular citadel where you can visit the watch tower, arsenal and underground chapel. The citadel was built on the remains of a 12th century castle. The four tower bastions in the town wall were completed in 1703, and access to the city was through two gates.
